I’m Sonia and I have a love for the simple sustainable budget lifestyle and travel; photography; volunteering; general exploring and everything in-between.
My Journey - how did it all start for me: I’m an Australian in her mid-30’s who left my home in September 2015 to explore and ‘shed her old skin’. In my ‘old life’, I completed my university studies and established a career in Corrective Services as a Senior Probation and Parole Officer. However, during my eleven years of service I was diagnosed with anxiety, struggled with self-worth and self-esteem, and my general health deteriorated; all led up to burn out.
So, after having a real hard look at myself and my life, I realised I needed and wanted more. However, it took a phone call at 4am one morning from a friend (who was teaching TEFL in Vietnam) that had me enrolling in a TEFL course. After completing the course, I found myself teaching English in a remote village in the South of Thailand called Phra Saeng on a 6-month fully supported internship, having the time of my life.
During my time there, I had the opportunity to volunteer at an orphanage just outside of Surat Thani. This was THE 'wow' moment and sparked my passion for volunteering whilst travelling. Watching those children having fun, learning and smiling was worth everything.
Fast forward to 2017 and I have: island hopped the Greek Islands; road tripped Albania and Macedonia; volunteered on farms through Italy (through WWOOFing); visited the Iron Lady herself in Paris; practiced my night photography in London and Glasgow; celebrated new year in Edinburgh Scotland; fell in love with the scenery in the Scottish Highlands; and celebrate the ANZAC spirit in Turkey. Boy, do I have some stories to tell… you.. lol 😉
I was recording my experiences and photography on my personal Facebook page with friends and family. It was them who encouraged me (since 2016)to create this blog to share my experiences, especially my volunteering stories, with those who would be interested in getting more out of their travels.
Looking at what I’ve been able to achieve and tick off my ‘travel bucket list’, I have never forgotten the two promises I made to myself the very day I purchased my one-way plane ticket that started my journey:
1) ‘to learn as much as I can’ whilst exploring new places; and
2) ‘step outside of my comfort zone’, managing my anxiety and learning 'just to breath' – all whilst on a budget and discovering sustainable ways to life and travel.
Presently I’m working in the United Kingdom to fund my explorations and travels whilst my ‘travel bucket list’ continues to grow. When I'm not at work, or with friends, or practicing my photography, or volunteering or travelling, I’m undertaking courses helping me to create my blog and build my social media management skills. You never stop learning... 😉
As you can gather, I'm not a 'polished' or an exceptional writer by any stretch of the imagination and this whole 'blogging stuff' is very new to me. But I am passionate about wanting to share my stories, adventures and photos with you, and I'm up for the challenge 😉 - we can learn this together xxxxx
I can’t wait to share my budget travel escapades, my volunteering adventures, the people I’ve met on my journey, reviews and stories, and my photography through my blog and social media platforms.
Feel free to have a look around, join me on my journey and fellow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - share, like and comment. I would love to hear from you.
